The Importance of Careful Tool Storage
I had reason to use my not quite worthless Craftsman palm sander (which was a gift, BTW) the other day. I dug it out of the bottom of a tool box that holds a lot of misc stuff.
I was sanding away when suddenly there was this rattling sound coming from the sander. Before I could react….
BANG!!!!
Scared the bejeebers out of me. I get the thing shut off and as it slows to a stop a shell casing from a power shot for the Remington power actuated nail gun falls out.
I keep the shots in the tray that sits above the sander in that tool box.

More the story how a tools try to kill us, see post on 'nail in head, guy'.
I brought home some candles from a rental. The mover would not allow them on truck. I also got a lawn mower and gas , and an electric chainsaw brand new. Dont ask , I dunno why.
Anyway , I was buring candles in the shop and no Andy C wasnt with me. Seems somthin caught fire and it tried to burm me dewalt flash light up. I was upset , but the light lives on with a serious warp.

Rich,
I had a very similar experience with my 1/3 sheet dual action Makita sander. (a keeper) Several years ago a nail got in there where the flywheel/fan resides, and broke off a couple fins...maybe 3-4. That was a scare, but didn't ruin the sander.
Sometime last spring I was sanding a project, and...BANG! All hell let loose as the flywheel/fan ####'y exploded sending chunks of metal flying all over the place, even embeding themselves in objects in the vicenity! I got hit by several peices, but had baggy clothing on, so just got stung. I was lucky!
I guess that using it for so long with it being out of balance, weakened it to the shattering point. My point is, if yours didn't kill itself, beware that it may try again!
Mine is a keeper and I was able to get the part from Makita for 18 bucks. I was stoked because they discontinued that sander in the late '80's I think.
Be safe!
Peace
"My point is, if yours didn't kill itself, beware that it may try again!"Very good point. I'm sure nothing else came out of it besides the shell, but that doesn't mean there isn't any damage. Guess I'll give it a good look over.Thanks.Rich BeckmanAnother day, another tool.
Glad to be of help Rich...and if ya look at my pic's in the work trucks thread, you'll see that I am ever so careful about tool storage! LOL
Sometimes I crack myself up.
