The things I see never cease to amaze me
I was talking to a client yesterday when I noticed a house was being worked on across the alleyway. I mentioned it for some reason and she said they had been shut down for working without a permit. Later when I delivered some material by way of the alley and looked over. This is what I saw. She said it has been sitting like this for three months.

whoa! that can't be good! The longer that sits like that the worse things are going to get.
Doesn't look like that place ever had a footing. Might be that it is just covered with whatever that foundation stone is though.
Which was probably okay until the hack exposed and undermined it....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
If ya ask me, the building dept. is just as guilty as the unlicensed contractor.
Leaving that as is in the dead of winter in your neck of the woods is criminal.
Work with the homeowner, even the "contractor".....hand hold if necessary......but don't leave it sitting there inviting disaster.

The indifference of Building Departments seemingly knowing no bounds.
I'm surprised that there's not a board fastened across the screen door, up above there, to "close in" a potential exit to a long drop below.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Good point.
I never even "looked up" to notice.

The white trim on the "window" looked "wrong," until I saw that it was a screen door--so that caught my eye.
Makes me wonder what was there before the whiz with the bobcat came along. Bulkhead, or the existing door under a "stoop" of some sort? Steps "one way" and basement door "the other" . . . ?
What ever it was, it was dilapidated enough to get what's in the picture now (and that's more than passing scary to contemplate).Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Why do you need a board to close off the door, it's only one step to the bottem???busta :0)"It ain't da seafood dat makes ya fat anyway -- it's da batta!"

Yeah, and in my town, the Fire Marshall takes it a tad personally if you leave places that risk his having to fill out long WC forms for his firefighters . . . Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
yep you're right about that busta"It ain't da seafood dat makes ya fat anyway -- it's da batta!"
I always thought footings were overrated.

I'm impressed its still standing!
Last July I went to the UK to visit my folks. Guy down the hill wanted to add a second floor over the existing garage. The building dept had him remove the old garage and dig down for new foundations. Problem is this was right next to the 2 story building next to him.
Building dept came to inspect the diggings for the foundation and told him 12" deeper. So thats what he did.
That night the building next door slid into the new diggings for the new foundation. This is all brick and block construction, took 4 days to clear the mess.
I was back there in November and they are still working on it. Appears the lower guy is a DIY and is working on his bit when he has time. Mean time the upper house has gone from 5 bed to 3 useable and down to one bath room. I don't know who's paying on this one!
