Thin Film PV on Metal Roofing

Snort | Posted in Energy, Heating & Insulation on January 16, 2009 01:25am

I have a client who is interested in PV panels on a metal roof (to be installed). I found this film while surfing around, and wondered if anyone has used it (or something similar), or knew anything about it.

www.tvwsolar.com

I went down to the lobby To make a small call out. A pretty dancing girl was there, And she began to shout, “Go on back to see the gypsy. He can move you from the rear, Drive you from your fear, Bring you through the mirror. He did it in Las Vegas, And he can do it here.”

"Thin film" refers to the technology used to make the photocells. AFAIK, there is no "film" available that can be readily applied to existing surfaces, if that's what you're thinking.

Note that they don't show the laminate actually being applied to the roofing.

There are a couple photovoltaic/shingle integrated systems available. I posted a link after reading an article a couple months ago, but don't remember the names

Head on over to the JLC Forums and find Bill Robinson in the Exterior Details area (he's the mod). He has some significant experience that might help you.

I'm wondering how often there is a hail storm in your area?

Any idea if PV panels increase home owner's policy?

I think that is part of the beauty of the thin film ... flexible ... doesn't break w/ routine impact of the baseball, hail, etc. The down side is tht it may be somewhat less efficient than the 'high tech' rigid/glazed type panels.

        1. DanH | Jan 16, 2009 05:47pm | #23

IIRC it's somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 as efficient.

        2. Snort | Jan 17, 2009 05:14pm | #26

The efficiency is what I'm concerned about. It's a sketchy situation to begin with. 10 - 12 pitch, middle of roof cross gable, big tree across the street to the southwest. Thanks for the linkshttp://www.tvwsolar.com

Yeah, pay your money ... take your choice. Time and place for everything. Nice low profile and durable.

  5. Clewless1 | Jan 16, 2009 07:31am | #12

We are using it on carports where I work. Great stuff! It is applied to e.g. standard metal roofing using adhesive. It's about 1/16" thick maybe 3/32. We're installing lots of this stuff in the SoCal desert. Don't know a lot about the comparitive efficiency, but if you want to keep it thin and light and low profile, this is a great way to go.

    1. klhoush | Jan 16, 2009 08:20am | #13

I was watching the green channel and a guy in SF used it. He also ran pex tubing under the metal for solar water heating. That's a 3 in 1 system!

Don't try that in the desert though, it would probably melt the pex! ;-)

I installed a system on a standing-seam metal roof, the panels were amorphous silicon, made to fit in the fields 'tween the seams.  Used shooters w/rubber washers to screw the panels to the roof (there were areas at the top and bottom of the panels w/o silicon, OK to screw through).  Used a gutter (imagine a low-profile molding) across the ridge for the wiring.

Worked great.  It was a net-metering system.

Here's a paper on that very product by UW.  Nice to ahve more than the manufacturers info:
