Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
Warning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. There are some in here who think I'm a hackmeister...they might be right! Of course, they might be wrong too!
Hey blue- I thought you were the framer ;~)

BB,
If you read the bag I believe it may say something about that limitation.
I hear a 1/4" all the time, and if you mention it to certain pros they'll get all hot and bothered like 4lorn does when I tell him I buried a j-box.
That said, i have used it quie thick to build out, but fixing an out of plumb wall............
It's real difficut to range the tile when you start building up like that.
By ranging, I mean much like a mason does when he builds a block wall.
All four sides have to be within the same plane. It's not easy, but with a lot of patience, it can be done.

so how do you straighting a wall.
so how do you straighting a wall.
Slowly!.
Assume your wall is out of plumb, tipping out towards the exterior at the top.
In this case you need to keep the bottom tiles close to the wall and fudge them out (in) as you go up. It ain't easy, let me tell you. If you are using fairly large tile, say 12x12, you can place a level right on the face of the tile to check for plumb and work your way up.
Small tile will be exceedingly difficult.
I would reccomend correcting the framing either with sister studs or long tapers.
Or wire lathe and mud.
How far out which way is this wall?
I thought you just built that place??
I'm goin to watch deperate Housewives in a minute, email me if you want and/or I'll talk to you tom.

If you start at the top, this method works. I use it for heavy slate tiles. Cut some 2X2 supports and use them to hold on the tiles in the top row. Once the thinset hardens for about an hour, it should hold anything, even if it is an inch thick. Then gang-cut your supports to fit the next row. One support per tile will give you the flexibility to adjust each tile as necessary. This is also handy when you use hand-cut slate of varying thicknesses.
