I’m thinking of laying tile in the entry of my office. It is a slab floor with commercial grade sheet flooring over that, and carpet glued down over that. Once I remove the carpet and adhesive must I also get the vinyl off the slab? If not, what preparation is recommended?
Thanks,

Hi U,
After removing the carpet , you find the sheet flooring is in good shape ( still holding fast to the concrete), you can tile right over top. Scuff sand the flooring using 80 grit paper and then make sure you use a thinset mix that will bond to your vinyl or lineoleum...it should say right on the bag if the thinset mix will adhere to it...most of them will.
If your sheet flooring is loose and coming up in a lot of places, it would be better to remove it all and then proceed to tile. Should this be the case, you may get lucky and pull the stuff right up off the floor, but if having difficulties, you can rent a (floor) power scraper from a tool rental store. Basically, this tool has a large, thin steeled scraper blade ( you will have to buy this item...approx $10) that gets under the sheet vinyl and scrapes it off. This tool may rent for $20 or $30 but is well worth it if ...unless you like doing grunt work. After removing the sheet vinyl, use thinset mix and proceed with tiling.
If the sheet flooring is intact but has just a few loose spots...cut these spots out and use a little extra thinset in these areas as a "backer."
Good luck.
