We’re putting a bath in the basement of our townhouse. We’re building a shower against one of the “exterior” walls (it’s shared with a neighbor, not the great outdoors). I’m wondering–could we avoid firring out that wall, to save the inches in the shower, and somehow put tile onto cinderblock? If so, how would we prep the wall to smooth out the variations between cinderblocks and mortar? Any help/advice would be great. Thanks! Melissa |

my guess- (and I shouldve stopped with that) but without any knowledge whatsoever I would say fur in and eat the two inches. If you must install over the cinderblock I would guess that you would need to seal the block first. You would then be tiling over the drain pan onto the block wall, that would be the biggest area for leaks since it wont be flush. Ive heard of people using bullnose tile to cover that small gap but I always insist on furring. sorry. I just dont see how you will prevent leaks.
I'd say not best practice but..............if you are doing a mud pack base or a preformed based you will tile over, the Schluter's Kerdi is the way to go.
There were a couple of threads here recently regarding it's use. One was from Mong in the Photo Folder.
Maybe someone will see this post that can give you a link to it or you may search for it yourself using the key words Kerdi or Schluter or a combination of the two.
Google Schluter Kerdi

I was thinking the same thing.
I've not used Kerdi as of yet ... but seeing as how this will need some sorta waterproofing anyways ... the "thin-ness" of kedi might make it the ideal product for this particular application.

You need some sort of decoupling membrane between the cinder blocks and the tile. Any small movement in the blocks will telegraph as cracks in your tile. Like the other guys said, Kerdi is probably the way to go, but I don't know for sure. Check out http://johnbridge.com for more opinions.
