I was watching one of those trading places shows and they tiled directly over a laminated counter top. They did not show any prep work on the laminate. While the finshed product looked ok, how would it hold up? I have never heard of anyone doing this.

Assuming you're talking about a plastic laminate, 20+ yrs ago I did that for my MIL. Still there. We roughed up the laminate, probably 80 grit. No idea which mastic was then used but it wasn't complicated.

Ive seen people do this also, you can do thos several ways one way requires the counter to be in very good shape. if it has a rounded front edge you will need to cut it sq. after that sand it with a xtre course sand paper and start laying tile , dont use a ready mixed laytex adhisive as it gets soft when a warm pan is set on it . A better way is to screw down 1/4 in plywood -I personally like the new 1/4 in cement board not durrock this stuff is thin easy to cut and is strong , its light gray then use thinset morter with accrilic added to it. have fun.
