I remember seeing, on tv I think, applioation of some kind of waterproofing membrane as an extra layer of protection. Orange, if I remember correctly. I believe this was installed under the cement board. I’m the GC but try to keep up with what’s new in all areas and ask my subs if they’ve heard of or used some of these new products. My tile sub is old school and thinks cement board is sufficient, but will consider anything reasonable I request. Would like some input about this product from anyone familiar with it. Thanks.

Red guard. It gets painted on top of cement board in several coats.
I would look for a new tile sub if he thinks cement board is a waterproof system.
Kerdi (I think). Its a water barrier. There is more about it in the "Tile Question" thread.
Its called Kerdi-Drain Their web site is wwww.schlutersystems.com
Its probably Kerdi. It gets installed over the cement board, or even drywall, with thinset. Then the tile is set over it.Once the Kerdi is installed, the entire shower is water proof. You could conceivably use it at that point, but the customer will probably like something a little less orange.
To comply with TNCA (Tile Council of America) details you need a moisture barrier behind the cement board (or Redguard/similar on top). 6 mil poly behind the cement board is fine. It's worth noting that some tile installers don't like this idea. Redguard and Kerdi are both good products too.
It makes sense that some kind of water barrier should be installed behind the cement board. Easy enough to do and big plus in case of failure. Of course there is always a horror story somewhere about each and every thing. When I asked my tile guy about the orange (kerdi) on top of cement board, he hasn't tried it but someone he knows did and the bond between cement board and kerdi failed causing Kerdi to come loose and all the tile came down with it. What a mess. Probably bad installation for sure. I'd rather paint the redguard on than chance that happening. Thanks for the advice everyone.
Redgard is pinkish and Kerdi is orange.
You can see both applications in my web site below if you'd like.
Redgard gets two applications if you want it as a crack isolation membrane and you can use one to make your work water resistant.
I always go with two coats no matter what.
Sounds like they used a modified thinset. It needs a setting compound because it wont let air in necessary for modified thinset.
everyone's right its Schulter
everyone's right its Schulter kerdi or ditra, but it goes on top of the cb, under the tile, you may also want to try Imper by profix, rolls on with a roller instead.
