tile walls or plaster ceiling first??
I am currently remodling my bathroom, I need to hang 1/2 blueboard and have it plastered with a sand finish on the ceiling and also cut out the 20 or so inches of punky blueboard/skim coat around the top of my one piece fiberglass tub surround. I am planning on putting up wonderboard and then ceramic tiling around the top of the surround up to the ceiling. My question is do I tile the walls first, and then do the ceiling? Or do I do the ceiling first and then cut out the existing blueboard/plaster on the walls and hang wonderboard and tile? Thanks for any direction on this.

I assume you don't want to do the job again.
This might be a good time to rethink the wondeboard replacement of punk wall. By this, I mean tear out all the wall around the tub, and replace all the board with Durock as a base for your tile.
The cement is impervious to leak-in water, and will hold the tile well because of it's porous surface grasping the mastic.
When I do this job, I do the walls first and then the ceiling, but others may do it differently.

I'm pretty sure "Wonderboard" is a brand name for another cementicious backer board, much like "Durock."

when drywalling...
the ceiling should always be done before the walls...
that way....the drywall on the walls can add a bit of support to the edges of the ceiling......all be it only 1/2 or so around the perimeter.
and....that overlap hides the joint line better...looking up.
USG may even had something to say about it on their site....I was taught this by a drywall rep way back in trade school.....made sense to me.

Jeff, you are right. Don't know what I was thinking.
The point I was trying to make, I'm sure you caught, was that patching into drywall in a bath/shower situation is the wrong way to do it.

demo everything.
drywall ceiling.
close up the walls with wonderboard.
finish ceiling.(this could actually be done afte tile....but I'd get the dirty stuff outta the way before tile)
tile walls.
grout.
prime....caulk(use matching grout caulk at the ceiling/tile joint, and in the tile/tile corners)......paint.

Yup, make your final surfaces from the top down. That way what you drop or spill doesn't screw up what you've already done. Gravity.... work with it.
