Getting rid of the 45 year old wool carpet in the entry and hallway of the 1931 built manse.
My tiler suggests removing the carpet and screwing in 1/4″ Rhino board over the fir floor, then we can tile over that. I’m wondering if I would be better off adding wire lathe above the Rhino board.
My concern is the transition between the tile and the existing Oak floors in the Living room, and the carpets in the bedrooms off the hallway. Otherwise I could put down cement board, but it will end up too high.
What say you folks?

Not certain whether it's the Canadian code or the tile-mnftrs recommenfdation, but 1" recognised as the min subfloor thickness. Since I don't know what Rhino borad is I can only say that around here we screw or staple down 3/8" ply onto the std 5/8" subfloor to meet code/reqmnts. Thinset mortar will do the trick on this. The mesh is unnecessary IMHO. Now, as to thickness - your carpet is abt 1/2" thick, plus underlay, so unless you go for saltillo tiles (which are quite 5/8" thick before they crown out) you won't have too much of a difference. In fact, I've never stubbed my toe on any tile/carpet transition. If there's a cut edge at the threshold you may want to either use Schluter trim (or equiv) or a nice decorative wood or metal trim to ease the step.

Re-read your post...what thickness of extg flooring is there? for an older house it's probably thick enough (see my other post), Depending on the finish (waxed?) you could go right over the top, but may indeed need metal lath. But why not refinish the fir?

Answer: The hall is a typical narrow, lath & plaster and is NOISY with wood. Shades of echoing grand canyon! I would have prefered to refinish, personally.
The fir is typical in this area, probably 1=1/8" over 16" OC old growth fir or hemlock.
Rhino board is 1/4" cement board for stiffness, over the fir, and the floor tile over that.
Which small island? You might get stuck there if BC Ferries gets the rate hike for fuel surcharge they asked for today.Quality repairs for your home.

Aaron - you think it'll be quieter with tile??? And I guess Rhino board is what we on Salt Spring call Hardi-backer. Just another name. So-o-o, nail down some mesh (even stucco wire, I think, was in an FHB a year or two ago) as youd' certainly have enough substrate thickness.
