I am debating on whether to install a laminate kitchen countertop or a tile countertop. If I choose to go with the tile countertop, is it better to use ceramic or porcelain tiles?

Just my personal taste, but I'd never, ever do a tile top.....too many other good choices around.
porcelain tiles are harder than ceramic, so they can be more difficult to cut. they also take heavy loads better than ceramic. But on a countertop, there are no loads to speak of, so use a tile that you like.
laminate has no seams (or almost none) that will collect dirtm and it is perfectly smooth. But it can't take a really hot pan. Tile is very durable, but not smooth (every grout joint is a dip), and glasses dropped on it tend to break more readily.
