Help! I want to install 12 x 12 granite tiles over a painted brick fireplace. (It has a gas insert in it.) Should I use backerboard and if so, how do I apply the backerboard? One suggestion is to use Liquid Nails, or equivalent. Is this OK? Is it rated for a fireplace?
Thanks

The paint makes this an open question. How well bonded to the brick?
I would NOT use a mastic for fireplace area. Thinset, but you might need a scratch coat first

Best practice might be to shoot wire lathe on, then skim coat loos mud or maybe thinset.
Sketchy on adhering anything to the paint wich would be pretty much what you are doing any othe way.

hey hiker1,
Backerboard is cheap. Square that up with some composite shims and pop for a box of Mr. Hardies screws. Old brick is pretty soft. But they should grab.

Thanks....to all that replied. I have a backerboard left over from my floors and counter tops. I will experiment with the screws.
If that seems inadequte (this is earthquake country), I will try the wire and mortar.
Wish I hadn't sealed and painted it now :(
