I have an old bathroom that has crazed and yellowed ceramic wall and floor tiles that were once white. I’d like to tile over them. (I saw workers doing this during a rehab of a New York City subway station years ago.) Do I need to rough up the glaze on the wall tiles with a sander and/or make long, deep cuts into the old wall tile to hold the adhesive? (I don’t think I need to do anything special first for the floor except clean it well.) What adhesive would you suggest? Many thanks for your help.

Yes, you may do so.
Use some TSP to get rid of the grease. Rinse well.
Use an etcher that can be found in most masonry supply stores, and follow the directions carefully. I might also consider some 80 grit sand paper, or really heavy duty emery paper as well.
I's use thinset for the adhesive. The size notch would depend on the tile. Bigger tile, bigger notch.
At least thats how we do it here in Mother Russia.

Do Mother Russia and the NYC subway constitute endorsements? I've seen spontaneous painting in both places, also, but I wouldn't recommend the method.
Nonetheless, the major problem will probably be the increased dimension.
