I’ve installed quite a few ceramic tile floors but so far they’ve all been over plywood subfloor using this routine – trowel on thinset mixed with acrylic admix instead of water, screw down 1/4″ concrete board, allow to set overnight, install tile the next day also using thinset mixed with admix, again allow to set overnight, grout & finish up the next day. The finished floor feels as solid as walking on concrete. My question is – now I get to do my own floor in a house I’m having built but the subfloor will be OSB not plywood. Can I use the same method as with ply without any problems? Will thinset adhere okay? Would much rather have ply subfloor but its not in the budget. Would appreciate any advice or experience. Thanks in advance.

How thick is the OSB? Make sure that's adequate first. Then try a test mix of stuff on scraps of the osb for a couple nights. Do a comparison using construction adhesive or mastic.
My biggest concern would be that some of the OSB is pretty slick feeling on one side and the thinset might not stick well to it. I lean towards using mastic instead for this first gluedown.
*Bob,when I built my home I used 3/4" t&g osb as a sub floor.I have several tiled areas where I glued down 3/8" plywood underlayment, set the tiles with admix and grouted with modified grout.I haven't had any problems to date(it's been almost six years now). However if I had it to do over again here's what I would do...3/4'' t&g sub.,1/2" rockboard set with acrylic thinset then tile. Most tile mfgs. require at least 1 1/4" under the tile for proper installation.
*Thanks much, guys. Appreciate your ideas and input.Bob
*b Tiling over TileLooking for opinions and or suggestions on overlaying ceramic tile. The existing tile (on a slab) is in good condition, just needs to be updated. My plans are to rough up the existing surface (by sanding?) and lay a new floor on top. Should I fill in the existing grout lines and if so with what? Thanks for any help.
*b WBA At Your ServiceAndy, Mapei makes a thinset product that can be used directly over existing tile with no special prep other than ensuring that the existing tile is clean of soap films and residues. Check with your local tile dealer for the exact product. Our tilesetter does this for us occasionally.
*my advice is to spend the extra money for the plywood! Then use a 1/4 inch cement backer board.
*I am looking for any books or web sites on the proper way to bend coil trim. I bought a tapco brake and I am have a problem get the tabs around the windows. Any information. Thanks.
