I have a really old bathroom (circa 1929). The once white glazed tiles are now yellowed and crazed. Can I tile over them? Do I first need to cut grooves or rough up the tiles for the adhesive to stick? What kind of adhesive should I use? I really don’t want to tear off the old tile if I can help it. Many thanks for your advice.

I'm so glad you didn't suggest to score the old tile! The tile is in great shape considering it's such an old bathroom. What additive should be added to the epoxy thinset? Many thanks for your reply.

I have tiled ove existing tiles many times.I have always done what Joe F. suggests except that i just used regular ready mixed wall mastic.I have never had a problem with adhesion, in fact I had to remove some tile and found it really hard to do. The biggest problem is that the mastic takes much longer to dry when it has no air or over a non porous substrate,so wait to grout til your sure it is dry. They also make a tile cap for tile over applications(for the top row or bullnosed areas).Call Dal Tile
*Tile over tile no problem. Epoxies work great, cost alot and are more toxic than good thinsets. Mastic with large tile could take a damn long time to dry and I don't recommend that approach. Joe F's bullet proof prep won't hurt. HB Fuller's TEC 390 is a wonderfull full flex thinset that I would use for this application every time. No additive used with this, add water and enjoy. Despite the fact that it costs more than most thinset $20 and change for 50lbs its worth considering even for everday use.Joe
