Listeners write in about removing masonry chimneys and ask about blocked ridge vents, deal-breakers with fixer-uppers, and flashing ledgers that are spaced from the wall.

You'll want to get a copy of the TCA Handbook (Tile council of America) and Michael Byrne's book Setting Tile. Also check out JLC forum where Byrne is a moderator -- though I recommend you post judiciously. Is the tub indoors or outdoors? Will make a diff. in the product selection.
*I have tiled shower pans. The smaller the tile the better. I used cement and grout designed for submersion. I would suspect that if you have to break or cut tile the sharp edges would have to be eliminated somehow. Your project seems to be one that will have to take good pre-planning.
*Ditto on the TCA Handbook. And the ANSI Specs as well. They can be ordered on line at http://www.tileusa.com/publication_main.htmYou'll need a membrane either (1)CPE, and then a tiling surface over that, like a mortar; or (2) One of the trowel on membranes.I would use thinset to set the tiles. It is not prepackaged. Clean out all the grout lines and remove all, and I mean all thinset from the grout lines before grouting. Mosiacs have a way of collecting thinset between the grout lines, and any stuck in there will impede the grout. This is really important. I wait about 45 minutes and flick it out of the grout lines with a piece of wood or a small dowel. As for the grout, I would really, really want to pack that grout into the spaces. Thats why you clean it out. It will do a lot for making the application waterproof. If you want to avoid grouting all together, use an epoxy thinset and mix it with a compatable epoxy grout, and set and grout in one step. This may sound easier, but it is not, as the epoxy is really a mess. Wear gloves. It will get all over everything, and will be impossible to get off if it sets.Post your question at http://www.jlconline.com/forums/tile/or at http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4Us tile guys hang out there.
