I am adding a timber frame addition to a balloon framed garage.
6×8 posts will go up against an existing 2×4 frame wall.
The old and new structures will have adjacent, but isolated, foundation systems.
Question: should we lag the posts into the existing frame wall?
This would mean removing existing insulation, etc. to add a lot of new blocking.
Aside from the labor and cost, my big concern is wood movement.
As the timber shrinks or the new foundation settles, I’m afraid of the effect on the lagged wall.

i'm not sure what you'd be gaining by connecting the post to the wall. structurally, the timber frame stands independently, and you want the wood to move together. lagging to the post will impede this movement.
with that said, i don't think it matters all that much one way or the other. i personally wouldn't bother. worst case scenario what happens?......not much.
