Here’s a link to some photos of a timber frame garden room I built a client this past summer using eastern white pine timbers and “Thermo Steel” panels for the roof.
While I didn’t need to use those panels on the roof I used em’ anyway cuz I was dying to try them out and love them as I thought I would. I’d use these for the walls as well if I were closing it in…but I’m not.
The customer who is now friends with me had us over for dinner the other night and he bought a giant flat screen TV that he had installed on the fireplace chimney. Kinda cool but it does take away from the romantic side of the fireplace…unless you wanna watch sports I reckon…lol
Here’s the photos (the slide show button at the top left shows the photos nicely): http://picasaweb.google.com/andybuildz/TimberFrameGardenRoom?feat=directlink

Nice job Andy. I was just thinking about this project yesterday and wondering how it turned out.
Are those ThermoSteel panels functioning like a roof SIP?
How does the beadboard attach to the underside? Firing screwed to the panels?
And as long as I'm asking questions, is the HO the Tattooed Jew that you've mentioned before?
Best,
Steve

They're way better'n SIP's panels imo b/c they're 'manageable' and come cut to exact sizes and shapes. Each panel is 5 1/2" thick but you can get different thickness'.
And oh yeh..sorry..its ThermAsteel http://www.thermasteelcorp.com/ Sucky website but a great product!!And yeh...we screwed furring to the steel ribs in the panels with self tappers.
One flange gets screwed into the adjoining one and thats it! We have real long screws that go through the entire panels and into the timbers below as well.Yep...thats who I call The Tattooed Jew...lolView Image

Very nice. I like that shower, any more pics of it?How much is that therma-steel? Think it'd be cost effective for a whole house? Burlington's not too far ... and there's a Woodworker's Supply on the way<G>http://www.tvwsolar.com
We'll have a kid
Or maybe we'll rent one
He's got to be straight
We don't want a bent one
He'll drink his baby brew
From a big brass cup
Someday he may be president
If things loosen up
It's more worth it on an entire house then what I used it for but I wanted to try it out on something small first. the time it saves is amazing and what yer left with is a super insulated house that went up FAST!View Image

Have you considered putting the underside of the panels down first and then screwing the panels down?
I found that a much easier way to deal with the SIP's than attaching them after the fact.
MY SIP panel manufacture AFM, will do wire chases and cut panels to exact size. I found it simpler to field cut them.
In the end I had very little wastage.
I also liked the monster sized panels rather than small panels. Fewer joints to worry about

Attaching the foam panel system I used is a breeze and one man could actually do an entire house alone if you had/want to. They screw together super simply and are as strong as anything I'd ever want and certainly never worry about any of the seams. Entire houses are built of this stuff. Plus you can order it any size you want.Giant SIPS panels are far too big unless you have a crane or lots of people power. Also ...in a TF the structure is what's holding the house together on it's own. Any skin you put on/in it only strengthens it that much more. For me manageability adds a lot to a product. Allows me to be that much more versatile.PS...if you look through some of those photos in their site....you'll see some of the carps are putting a cpl of panels together before they lifted them.
They really leave you with tons of options. The concrete blocks also let you become more versatile but they take a whole lkot longer then panels of any kind plus if you don't need a cement filled wall.....They ain't cheap....either.View Image

Yeh! I was spoiled having a telehandler on site. 30x18 footX 12 inch thick panels could go up with one finger.. It also took one finger to put those great big timber trusses up. I should mention that I had a total of 74 feet of effective reach with 10,000 pound capacity..
I should admit that there is absolutely no way I copuld have built this place by hand
Nicely done.
