Anybody have a good timber joint for 3-6″X12″ breaking over a 6″X6″ post. Was thinking on something like two half laps for the ones passing thru leaving the the top open for the half lap of the one teeing in.Any other suggestions. What if there was 4- 6″X12″ s breaking on a post?

Put them in different planes (Raise the perpendicular 6x6).
*Yeah, if you try to do half-laps, and tee one in, you are probably leaving too little wood to handle the shear load. You'll get a stress crack along the grain at the bottom edge of the tenon. Better to put the beams in different planes, use a metal connector, or use a bigger post. Mike
*How about a wedged scarf jount? Classic and good-looking too.

*George thanks for your reply. Will probably go with wedged scarf joint.Might even wrap some bands around it ala Greene.Im thinking of putting the joint equally between the post, centered in the room and fireplace wall. which means a 16'er will be supported at 0' and 10'.A triple 2x10 goes above this for the real joist system.Post are8"x8" which i'm going to taper cut on my band mill to 6"x6".I figured I'd morise in the side of 6"x12" at post 2" deep for 6"x12" meeting perpindic. to it.Then probably some metal brackets.Does this all sound kosher?Ken
*Ken, if you are starting with 8x8's, you could consider flaring the top of the post for more bearing area like the old timber framers did. Sounds like you worked out a system that doesn't require it, but it might look good. Just an idea,Mike
