I am planning to install LP Smartside lap siding on our house. I am also installing a rain screen. The instructions call for a 3/16″ gap between butt joints for caulk. I plan on back priming the siding, the butt joints and installing pan flashing. Is it “really” neccessary to leave the gap and caulk if I do that?

If you want any kind of warrantee, it is ALWAYS necessary to recognize that the manufacturer knows more about their product than you do.
This will grow in length with moisture and temperature, which is why a caulk cushion is needed.

I spoke with someone from LP. He told me that if I use a prefinished product I can pan flash the butt joints and not caulk if I prime the cut ends. It just doesn't seem reasonable to be that I can do that with a prefinished product but can't do that if I get the preprimed product back prime and prime the cut ends myself. Same product, go figure. I just hapen to think that some people are trapped in their "box" and can't think outside of it about alternatives that may actually be better in the long run.
Get it in writing.
