I would like to use some 5/4×6 pressure treated lumber for treads. I would like to use a gap to let out the moisture under the stairs. It’s very damp around here. What I would like to know is how long a period of time I would have to wait before painting .Thanks.

Any painted wood used outside should be dried to the paint manufacturer's specs before painting (10 % to 12%, I'd guess). Then, all six sides should be primed, if not top coated as well. Here's the kicker. If the wood's been out in the sun for more than two weeks, you need to sand it with 60 or 80 grit paper before painting. The sun destroys wood's ability to hold paint. Skip this step, and expect something like 25% of the life your paint job would otherwise have.
