I have an American Standard toilet – the taller and elongate front style. The tank on the toilet was broken beyond repair. The toilet itself is a discontuined model – #4293. I really do not want to replace the entire toilet. If I shop for a replacement tank what should I look for?
It is an American Standard toilet. 1.6 GPF.
Thanks, Mike

They sell the tanks seperately, all you need is one that matches the hole size. Call them and see what you can do.
There are also 3rd party tanks you can (or at least usta could) get. My MIL had a tank go and her plumber installed a plastic replacement tank. It was pretty good -- didn't sweat as badly as the original.

What holes are you refering to - the discharge hole and/or the two holes for bolts that hold down the tank to the bowl?
Again thanks, Mike
Yes
The tank can be replaced by an of the plumber. Seperate tanks are available in the market. You just have to give the specific size details to the shop keeper and then any of the plumber can install it easily.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I finally went to a local plumbing supply house. The guy at the counter - who knew everything about the store inventory - said he had an old chipped tank in the warehouse. The chip is on the back he said and it was sitting unsold for 7 years. He gave me the tank and all the insides for $50. Works great.

Lower cost to replace the whole toilet
It may cost considerably less to ujust buy a new toilet and install it.
It isn't that hard with a standard floor mount toilet. If you had a wall mount then things would be a bit more difficult.
