so as yall know me and my friend are working on the tree house making it smaller, and I have finished shingling the roof except for caps, I have just bent the shingles over the ridge to keep water out. It averages about 40* and the shingle “crack” when bent over the ridge. Can I heat the middle of the cap over a work light to soften it and then nail it in?
can you hold the laser level while I shave?

yup or use a heat gun or a hair dryer...

WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
Hair dryer works--not real good for it though. Be careful with a heat gun--they get up to something like 700 degrees which is very hot for shingles (or your skin).
Go with copper and give that tree house some class. Don't forget the zip line, trap door, and ammo storage.
And show us some pics.

I am going to get yelled at for this by someone but...
When I am roofing and it is cold (10 to 40 deg) I carry a propane torch for caps and anything that needs bent. Just run the torch on low flame a couple inches from the back and slap it down when it gets hot enough to bend.
It is hard to fool with a heat gun on a roof.
Andy, I just remembered that you are what 13, so if you are allowed to use a torch- be careful, I might feel bad if you burned yourself like I did when I was that age (never grab a pipe you just soldered, on the bright side the cops can't fingerprint my left pinky).

Actually Im 14 (15 in one day) and I don't have a heat gun, or torch, that's why I asked about work lights

andy-------- I capped in a 7/12 pitch yesterday in high 30's temps--no problemscoulder than that??--- store caps indoors--- untill use---or heat on floor of truck cab??????Heat gun is tedious.

I don't think Andy has a truck just yet.
He dont need a truck, the tree house is out behind the big house! Take the caps inside and bring a few out at a time.
Doug
excellent suggestion--
there are lots of times in november or march i brought home a bundle of caps---let them sit in my basement overnight and went back and capped in the customers house first thing in the morning with warm caps.

I'd just use the fireplace in the tree house.
looking back ... might explain why our tree houses never lasted long.
but they were warm during the winter ...
for a while.

Bring the shingles indoors into a warm place. After they warm up, bend them there.
That was my thought.
