In the thread on DiamondBack tool belts, I mentioned that I’ve wanted one for about 6 years now and still haven’t bought one yet. AndyC named a bunch of stuff that he keeps saying he’s gonna get around to buying too.
So he figured a thread on tools that you want but have yet to justify might be a fun idea. So here we are. I figure this thread might be a good way to help each other along into buying some of the things that we really do need. (Need is very relative) 🙂
BTW… I’m kicking myself hard for selling my Bobcat last spring. I hit the panic button way too early thinking that it was going to be a slow summer. We ended up having a killer summer. So now I’m back on the fence about buying another skidsteer. Any help would be much appreciated. 😉

A friend of mine just helped me with a septic install using a ( not sure here) 530 Massey Ferguson back hoe. I was using a shovel, my own, and he did more in 15 minutes then I do all day. You can get an ethernet camera. Or a web cam.
What I would do is buy a DVR. Honeywell sells a really sweet one. The DVR keeps cycling out the images without motion in them ever so often. So if you have to review your images you can do it way faster since the only ones you get are ones that actualy have something happening.
With that DVR you can also log on from any computer and watch it or review it. That's the one that my boss has on the triplex that his daughters live in down by the U of L campus. (I love doing service calls on that one.)
I can dig up some info tommorrow on it if you want.

I've always wanted a bulldozer. Why do I want a bulldozer you ask ???Well, to me it's kinda like they say about Harley motorcycles - If you have to ask, you just don't understand.
Q: What's the difference between in-laws and outlaws?
A: Outlaws are wanted.
Boss, I saw one at an auction last year. Wasn't a big one, kinda hobby size maybe.
It looked pretty well used, but it did run. Went for $4000, which seemed about $3K over what it was worth. It was not in working condition for anything serious.
Sure was a neat thing though. DW even thought it was cute.
Joe H
Bulldozers hold their value well. Particularly if they're Cat brand.Any dozer that runs is worth several thousand dollars. If the one you saw was small, it may have been bought by a collector. Some smaller dozers (Like a Cat D2) are small enough that they can easily be hauled around to farm shows. That makes them worth more than a bigger machine at times.
All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them. [Galileo]
You're right. Tiny crawlers often go for what looks like big money to me, considering they won't do much. But for a guy with a pickup, they're moveable. The huge dozers are amazingly cheap, until you go to find somebody to move it.
A buddy here recently bought a JD440 track loader, like Junkhound's but with a hoe on the back. $4300 total, $3500 without the hoe. Struck me as cheap for a 4 ton tractor. I sold mine for $5k (no hoe) and had 2 buyers wanting it.
Dozers are much cheaper.
JD prices here are higher than comparable Cat prices. My experience is that I won't own another JD, Cat's the answer. PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
JD makes some NICE Dozers...

Well, there's always batteries, oil changes, air filters, fuel filters, lights, etc.
As my Uncle told me - "Every asset is also a liability".
And there are ALWAYS repairs. As you know all too well, parts can be insanely expensive. Cat parts in particular are priced as if they're gold plated.
Every piece of equipment I have has needed work at some point or another. My first tractor needed some internal work that I wasn't set up to do. It cost me $1,500 at the dealer.
Bent frame on my truck - $500. New engine - $1,500. My 2nd tractor has taken about $700 in work so far, and I'm nowhere close to done with it.
At this point, I just don't have the bucks to put into something else that needs money thrown at it on a regular basis.
Ability will never catch up with the demand for it. [Malcolm Forbes]
Cat parts in particular are priced as if they're gold plated.
I've got 2 ~40 yr old Cats and that's counter to my experience. I've also spent thousands for parts at the Case and JD dealers. Occasionally something jumps out, but I find them all about the same. Had a recent extremely pleasant surprise at the New Holland dealer for some hoe teeth, but I figured it was an abberation. 3 teeth for $10.50, total.
Exception is some of the large Cat hydraulic hose ends which are found only on Cats, far as I know. But if the hose lasts 40 yrs, I don't mind.
For instance, priced shanks, teeth, and cutting edge for Bertha. All competitive and nothing I wanted to pay. Cut my own shanks (by far the more expensive part) out of 2" square stock. Haven't broken one yet.
A JD450-owning buddy refused to believe I bought a Cat turbo cast steel part for $35 until I showed him the bill. That's a popular misconception, unreal Cat prices.
No idea what Cat labor costs, but I've seen recent horror stories from the Case dealer over brake/ball joint work. You really don't want an old tractor unless you're willing to get greasy or have very deep pockets. PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
I'll agree with that have a JD 2955 4 whell drive tractor gets used the very odd time in the summer to haul a dump box in my pit but its usually parked until it plows in the winter. just put $8700 into for a new clutch and my buddy gave a deal. Nice guy.

I sold my bobcat a couple years back too and then kicked myself for doing it. Had a ton of attachments, trailer, etc, but I needed the money at the time more than the skidder.
I just bought a new one this past year and am sure glad I made all the decisions again. I'll never own one without Air Conditioning and Power Bobtach again!!!! Gotta love that Gold Package!!!!!
I'd love an excuse to have more clam clamps. Or a Lamello biscuit joiner. Or the automated Kreg machine. I'd probably swap the trailer for a fifth wheel instead of a bumper pull if I didnt like the truck cap so much. I'd love a unisaw and a place to put it. Same thing with a wide belt sander. Pretty much anything that runs on 480 3 phase, I wish I had it and the place to store it.

Have you had someone come along and offer you a high price for your house yet? You could cash out of the current place and buy a different one that has enough ground for a polebarn. That would give you storage for the Lull, skidsteer and whatever else.
On a side note: I think it was VATom? that a couple years back was commenting on used equipment. How you could get a used loader (or whatever) to do your job with and when you were done sell it for the same money you bought it for. So for him (if it was VATom) it didn't make sense to spend thousands of $$ on renting it when he could buy it..sell it for the same amount. So his net cost was assuming responsibility for possible repairs.
The only reason this 'side note' applies to this thread is that it was a VERY good excuse for buying equipment.

Yes, but.... (always a but)
You need to be prepared to get greasy occasionally if you buy the vintage I do. Dealer repairs can get amazingly costly.
I buy for my use. Then invariably somebody finds me who'll pay me to play at their place. Always ends up I get enough to pay for the tractor.
Resale, like with anything, you need to watch what you're buying. For instance, my latest loader purchase I knew going in that it would be very difficult to resell. Large old industrial rubber-tired loaders get little interest here. Turns out it was the answer to my dreams, apart from resale.
My track loader's probably going to a new home soon, likely for more than it cost me. After having made 3-4x that much running it, plus all the work it did on my place. I'll sell before it needs undercarriage work.
Here's Bertha, with what JoeH is dreaming of in the background (it's really not a small tractor): PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
So was I attributing that comment correctly to you?
Considering where you're at, I think I'd want some rollbar type protection on Bertha.jt8
"Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Might very well be someone else you were quoting. I don't assume my (generally excellent) tractor experiences to be universally applicable. Junkhound would be a good guess. Not that I'd disagree. But I have known guys who bought tractors that turned into nightmares.
You're right about the open top. That pic was her first job, Case hoe was way too small for some of those rocks. Seems pretty much nobody uses these tractors like I intend. Bertha came out of a small stone quarry, used daily. Previous owner was shocked when he saw where I was going to run her. BTW, purchase price was $6k (plus tires and brake work).
Here's what Bertha got before she went to work here. Not roll-over, she weighs 23k lbs, but substantial widow-maker protection. And teeth. Amazing how easily she'll push over an 80' tree. Weight's pretty much everything with earthmovers.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Its amazing what you can find cheap. I bought a 1975 Cat D7 dozer for banking snow in my snow dump figured it wouldsit until next winter. Its been so busy this summer I hired a full time operator for it. I live in a rural area and it seems like every farmer in town has called me to use it to clear land. One guy hired to push out some stumps and brush with the root rake in a 6 acre field. Ended up been there for 3 weeks cleared more and and leveled off a big hill into more usable space. Not a bad machine for 20k. Im thinking about buying a newer one.
Tom, there's a lot of old equipment like that sitting around here, but it's not for sale.
"I'm gonna do something with that some day.............."
Yeah, the day you die your kids are going to call the scrap man.
Until then it's not for sale.
That's a big rock you got there. I have some that size up the hill behind me, and I suppose more buried where I can't see them yet.
Joe H
Until then it's not for sale.
LOL There's a smaller version of Bertha a couple counties N of here. Guy's been trying to sell it for at least 3 yrs, $1500. 4x4 with an industrial gas engine. Looked at it with 2 different friends. One said "too old", the other "too big". Must be the old guys around here are more interested in that cash conversion.
Bertha's previous owner also had a larger version he tried to sell me. 12' wide bucket with a rock sieve. Cab was 13' tall. Next to it, Bertha looked like that Case 580 in the pic, a peanut. Woulda had to widen my driveway and trim the lower branches from a few thousand trees. But $13K? It was a deal.
That's a big rock you got there. I have some that size up the hill behind me, and I suppose more buried where I can't see them yet.
That one's not visible any more. God help the poor sap who tries to find that septic field. Under the rock, which is under a couple feet of dirt. Most of the rocks there were smaller, generally under 10 tons. Until I started digging there wasn't anything remotely resembling a house site. Fill ended up about 25' deep at the edge.
Those Case 580's have incredible hydraulics/engines. Brakes aren't much, at least on the earlier versions. D's the newest one there. CK (the original) available cheap. PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Bertha's TOPLESS!What'id you do, drive under a low tree and knock the cab off?;)

Would've taken quite a branch.
That's 4x4 square tubing, 1/4" wall, called in help just getting the top rectangular frame up there (about 200 lbs). It's solid. As DW requested. She figures I'm worth more alive than dead. Something to think about when you're buying life insurance...
They're called widow-makers for reason.
Took me almost a week of cutting and welding to get canopy and teeth in place. About $125 in (mostly used) material, including that sheet of stainless on top which was once a kickplate on a commercial door. Alternative was buy everything ready to install, for $4700.
Scroungers is us. PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
That's exactly what I did with the Bobcat I got rid of. I bought it for $8600 to do the grading and landscaping at my place. When I was finished, I watched it sit idle in the driveway for about a month and figured I'd better stick to the original plan and get rid of it before I got too attached to it.
Sold it for $8900 but I put about $200 worth of fluids, filters, and knicknacks into it.
Now I'm kicking myself. But you're right.... if you're careful and do your homework, you can often buy and re-sell a machine and get your work done for virtually nothing. Of course you're always assuming the risk that you might break something major on it in the process and take a hit. But it's still not a bad way of working things if you've got the cash flow.View Image

I've pretty much got all the portable tools I want, but-
I've ALWAYS wanted a cabinet saw, preferably a Powermatic 66.
I've had a Delta contractor's saw for years, and really haven't had any problems with it. But every once in a while I'm ripping some thick stock, and trip the overload ting on the motor, and have to wait until it cools down.
Some day.
Oh yeah, I also want a set of those Lie-Nielson chisels. I've got 3 sets of chisels already, including some real nice Japanese ones, but those lie-Nielson's look sweet.
Oh how i want a panel saw. I have no idea why, I just do. Maybe its so i can be like the kids at HD, cutting wood to +- 1/4"?Yesterday I would have had another item on my list, but i finally broke down and bought an entire set of milwaukee self feed bits...no more flippin holes saws for me darn it...
Be careful with those bits.

Those things & a Holehawg can be a nasty combo.

Oh they will be run by a worthy tool...the Super Hawg in low. I have a few SF bits now, but just a few random ones and never the size I seem to need:)

Lathe(a Oneway), cabinet tablesaw, bandsaw, 15" thickness planer, 8" joiner, etc I have all the field versions of these tools, but there ain't nothin' like the big brother cabinet shop ones.
would love to get a Tormek sharpening system with all the bells & whistles (over $1000), I just can't justify it right now.
A LN 604 1/2 benchplane with the York pitch frog to go with it.
The PLs laser & detector that you told me to buy...I am getting it this month...I will I will, I just haven't done it yet.
I don't need one, but a Ridgid worm drive saw.
A set of 6 Two Cherries bench chisels. and some TC mortise chisels
Hirsch Chisels are the same as Two Cherries, just a different sticker. I got mine from Lee Valley.
"would love to get a Tormek sharpening system with all the bells & whistles..."
I have one, and highly recommend it.
But I wouldn't necessarilly recommend all the bells and whistles. What I use most is the knife sharpening jig and the chisel sharpening jig.
Great tool, though.
Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names. [John F. Kennedy]
Thanks for the reply. I probably will end up getting one, but it will be a year or so. Actually all I need is the chisel & plane jig, and the knife jigs both long and short.

I've been pulling a lot of commercial phone and data this week so my mind has been geared towards that stuff. So it didn't take much to push me over the edge.

This morning the boss was in a super charged get things done mode. I had to swing by the supply house and pick up some cable on my way to Lexington. He seemed in a big hurry but a happy hurry. So I tossed out the question. "Can I get a label maker?" "Sure." He answered back. I told him they were about a $120.00. (Our supply house is cheaper then the link I posted.)He kind of froze and said. "That's a lot of damn money." I shot back. "It's what the pros use." He smiled and replied." can't we buy what the amateurs use?" Nope we got to look like pros." I answered back. He just shrugged his shoulders and smiled.
When it was all said and done it came out to be a little over $200.00 But I got the whole kit with the shrink wrap labels and all the bells and whistles. Probably gonna be a minor azz eating but what the heck. I'm pretty thick skinned. And I have a bad label maker. :)
Pardon my fat fingers.

Make your boss a label that says "big spender".
I'll be honest G, I wish my guys gave me more input on tool preferences. One of the first things I told my new lead was that if there's something he wants or needs to do his job better, faster, or easier..... just let me know and it's done.
I usually find out the hard way. I buy myself a nice new toy and the guys have their paws all over it and I never see it again. That's why I've got two or more of pretty much everything. (But who's complaining, right?)
Happy Turkey Day, BTW.View Image
He wants us to have what we want. You just have to catch him at the right time. And I understand that. He's got a lot of money flowing in and out and he gets in a bad mood when he thinks there's more going out then coming in. But there's really nothing that I want and don't have. Give him a good enough reason and he doesn't mind. He wants everyone happy.
One thing that he's gonna start that we all like alot is a new uniform policy. There's a pretty decent clothing store in town that covers all the major brands. He's thinking about setting up an account there and then letting everyone go down and pick out what they want to wear. And then getting the company logo on them. Pretty sweet deal. Our current uniform is o.k. But everyones the same. He wants the guys to wear what they want. Polos pocket T's what ever. Very cool I think. Carhart carpenter pants for me baby.

I knew the new uniform policy was to good to be true. For some reason he changed the plan to new blue jeans and those stiff as heck pblue jean shirts. With frickin pearl snap buttons. I

To tell you the truth. I aint going through with it. I can't dress like that. Don't care for Blue jeans at all in the summer. Very litte in the winter.I can't imagine me in head to toe denim. It would feel like I had gasoline poured all over me.
I don't know what got into him to make him think that goofy outfit would look good on anyone. Can you imagine a dozen or so employees wearing that goofy get up? All sitting in our morning meeting? Scratching and itching, pulling at their collars and fidgetting in their chairs? This whole scheme has disaster written all over it.
I have to go in at 5:00 in the morning. I'm gonna have to talk to him about it. After he gives me the UofL basketball tickets he promised me this morning though. :) I want to get those first before he blows up and tells me how much he hates me. LOL

Sounds like you'll look more like a rhinestone cowboy with those buttons.
If you really want to change his mind, get one of those bead things gals use on cloths, and pimp up your work duds.
He might just rather see you nekkid than wearing that stuff.
Bummer dude.
BTW, the new batch of sweatshirts came in for the winter..... they literally weigh about 5lbs each. More than twice as thick as the hoodies I bought in the past. Crazy warm dude. It's like wearing a sleeping bag.
EDIT: BTW, we've been up to some cool stuff the past few days. I'm going to take pictures tomorrow.... watch for a thread in the photo section. Fully framed, sheathed, and trimmed dormers.... 6' wide with a 12 pitch hip roof on top.... flying through the air and landing on the roof. It's been a blast.

what kind of hoodies?
The first couple batches of hoodies I had made up were Champion Premium Reverse Weave. But these new big fatties are a brand called Camber. They're pretty cool. The hood snaps up tight around your neck for wind and the handwarmer pockets are fleece lined.View Image

Are you going to make those available for sale to Breaktimers or are you just gonna tell us how nice they are?
Sorry boss. See my post to Sphere and it will probably change your mind on wanting one anyway! :)View Image
Yeah. That's a little steep. You furnish those to your guys? If so you're a good boss.
Yes, my four guys each got one. I give them lots of company logo-ed gear because I want them to look decent on site. We do most of our framing in existing neighborhoods, not developments, and also frame a lot of additions. I think having the truck, trailer, forklift, and all of us in matching gear gives a decent presentation for a framing crew.
We've got regular hoodies, the new heavy hoodies, Champion T-shirts, long sleeve T's, and tank tops that all match.
Besides... it's a nice write off. I've got to buy work clothes anyway and I go through a ton of them, so I might as well get a decent write-off out of the deal. I'll be honest and tell you that I know I've more than made back what I spend on gear by being able to charge a hair more than the next guy by presenting the business as a respectable looking outfit. Especially as a relatively new company at 4 years. I'm still making new contacts and still do a fair amount of work directly for homeowners so I believe first impressions are important. Especially with the homeowners. I know they can feel a bit out of sorts in hiring a framer so looking like a 'respectable company' instead of just a 'framing crew' has it's benefits.
So yeah.... I'm a pretty good boss I guess. But rest assured.... there's something in it for me too. ;)View Image

I've only got two extras Sphere. They were $70 each, my cost. Part of the expense was the shipping as they're obviously bulky but like I said they literally weigh about 5lbs each. I'm afraid I won't part with the two extras. When you buy 7 sweatshirts for almost $500 you kinda get attached to them. :)View Image
how much of that was the logo?
that must be one hell of a hoodie..... My heavy carhartt was only around $40
It's tough to say Neil because I got another batch of long and short sleeve t-shirts at the same time. The set of screens was $80, so I guess I could look up how many total pieces I got in that order and do the math..... but sadly..... I don't feel like digging through my receipts right now. LOL...
I've got a couple of the Carhartt thermal insulated SS's and these things are substantially thicker. They really are "one heck of a hoodie" as you said.
When you're outside all day every single day of the year, the cold can really wear on you man. I know I'm not special or anything or telling you anything you don't already know. But I'm just saying that I'll try just about anything if I think it'll keep us a hair more comfortable in February than we would be without it. I've got $50 SealSkin socks, $40 pairs of gloves and an $80 set of polypropelene long underwear to prove it! :) Some of it works, some of it doesn't, but I'm willing to try just about all of it.View Image
" or telling you anything you don't already know."
I don't know man, I'm going soft, longest I'm out side lately is going from the heated truck.... which I pre-heat with the remote start... to the front door.... The guys look at me at me a little funny when I bitch about it being cold and they've been in it all day ;)
$80 set of polypropelene long underwear
Dude, seriously, leave your kinky bedroom habits to yourself....
Good luck with that Bobcat tomorrow.... Maybe next time you will not break my fifth rule of tool procurement again...
Rule 5. Do not, for any reason, sell a tool once you have bought it. You will find a use for it again and it will cost more the second go around.
Rule six states if you run out room to store stuff either add on, buy a bigger lot, or rent space
They were $70 each, my cost...
We've got a couple of local embroidery shops that once you are set up with your logo in their system charge about $5 each for the logos. I can even take my own shirts, sweatshirts, and whatever in for that cost. I had some nice pocket T's made last year.John

I've been using the same shop for a couple years now. She does anything of mine with a logo on it.... trucks, forklift, trailer, sweatshirts, t-shirts, tanks, hats, business cards, letterhead, envelopes, jobsigns, etc.....
All in all, I like to keep giving her the business. She's been good to me and her prices are fair. I got curious so I dug out the reciept. I paid $80 for the set of screen and this was a small order.....27 pieces. Works out to $2.96 per piece. Not too bad.
Jeff just posted a link to those sweatshirts online. They were $99 each on the website. So at $70 each, logo-ed, and delivered I think she's treating me pretty good.
Since I'm talking her up so much, here's a link to her website if anyone in the MA area needs this sort of work done. She designs as well. IIRC, my business card is on her website somewhere too.

Yes, like I said, I think she's been fair to me. Keep in mind that all my stuff is screen printed and not embroidered like yours. Embroidery will always cost a bit more but looks nicer as well. The logo on the back of my shirts is just way too big for embroidery. I think $5 for what I'm assuming is a chest logo is a really good deal especially if there isn't a minimum on the number of pieces and you can basically bring in whatever you want to.
We do have a few pieces around that have chest embroidered logos and they look really nice. Our Carhartt work jackets are and I have a few 'polo' style shirts as well as some Carhartt pocket T's that I had done for myself. I think the embroidery looks sharp.View Image

If you're still curious, I started a thread over in the photo-gallery of those dormers. My digital camera crapped the bed, so I had to run out and grab one of those cheesy disposables. Pretty disappointing results, but I did manage to get a couple decent shots. I was totally bummed out when I picked up the pictures, but I don't know what I expect from an $8 camera.
Oh well..... I'm sure I'll get another opportunity to do this sooner or later.View Image

You should have seen this zoo I was at. New Bank on Harrodsburg road. Every trade there at the same time. ( Every trade) It looked like one of those miracel house building shows where they build a house in 24 hours. It looked like a beehive.

We had the same kind of day. Our LAST day at the gutter job, and the freakin masons show up..first time in like 3 weeks...and start sawing rock RIGHT where I have set up to fabricate downspout. Painters everywhere, a PO'd project manager ( DAle made a new "friend" the other day) and then the carps all traipsing around gawking at us...asking stoopid questions.
" Uh, IZZAT expensive?"
" No, we do this for free"
That kind of stuff. jeeeze. I got some good pics, I'll get that thread back up this weekend if I can get the damm things to post...something has been screwy about getting attachments to work. I'll try from my LT and see what gives.

So if I send you a list of tags for my RG-6 cable, will you print me a bunch of labels?I'm using the write on ones from RadioShack. Ok, but I'd really like to have the writing be along the cable, rather than around it.
Man, I want a sewercam....the one with the sender on the head you can track aboveground would be nice, but a plain one would do
Maybe I should cobble together a cheap webcam, fishtape & cat 5 cable...
Got several downspout leaders & mystery floor drains I'd like to scope out
Our plumber has one of those and it has saved our butts on at least a few occasions...
I don't know what they cost, but it's definatly paid for itself in my book.
We have one for bank drive thru tubes. It's pretty cool we use it to look for leaks. I've heard that you can rent sewer cams at some Lowes and Home Depots now.
