Hello,
I have purchased new decking and after removing the railing found that the notched, pressured treated, railing posts are cracking. Due to the configuration of the railing, I don’t have much choice but to replace them with the same notch configuration, but I don’t want to have the same problem down the road. Can you tell me if cedar or redwood 4×4’s would be more resistant to cracking if notched? Also, I am strongly considering a top-mount post kit, such as this one:

Can you tell me if top-mount kits such as this are strong enough to meet code for a deck that is 8 ft off the ground?
Thanks, Eric
