Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!

Actually Tempstar does not make anything. They are one of the brand names for Heil-Quaker. Now United Tech - ICP.http://www.johnmills.net/work/history.htmlUnited Tech also is also the parent company of Carrier/Bryant. But the last time I looked at the annual reports and everything it appears that ICP is run completely separate from Carrier.
so we make that 17 units and one manufacturer...

Trane makes the best HVAC equipment but you'll pay for that quality.
Once upon a time, like over 20 years ago, that was true. With their commercial stuff right now, they are as cheap and as crappy as anything else. Trane is resting on their laurels and past quality. I have seen 40 & 50 year old Climatechangers in services that worked fine.
Two years ago we enigineered a complete replacement of the heating and venitaltion equipment in a local junior high school. All of the old Nelson unit ventilators were scrapped and brand new Trane units installed. I inspected every single piece of equipment installed. Tested and verified the operation, listened, pushed, pulled, etc.. Had I known how poorly this equipment was made, I would not have allowed it on my job.
I don't have any direct experience with their residential equipment, but if it is of similar construction as their commercial equipment, then it is not the best by any stretch of the imagination.
Number one best AC is Andy Clifford : )~

First, there are six (6) major manufacturers of the brands commonly available, based in the US. The Manufacturers are Nordyne, Goodman, Trane, Lennox, York and United Technologies.
In my experience, which is primarily commercial design and installation commissioning and troubleshooting, no manufacturer offers a superior or inferior product. All of them are equitable. All offer high, medium and low end equipment. With all other things being equal, you will get what you pay for.
The local dealers, installers and/or distributors are the variable part of the equation. A hack could screw up the best equipment and a good installation of the low end equpment will work well. Compare features and installation details. Ask questions, take notes compare, talk to references.
