Just installed the steel door on our tornado shelter under the reinforced concrete walls of our stairway.
Kinda interesting. I found an outfit that manufactures prison doors, that are as best as I can tell, exactly the same as a tornado proof door, except they cost half as much. Door weighs approx 300 lbs. Is mfg on a CAM system. Door, jamb & hinges are never mated at plant. Door went in as slick as a bacon grease dipped eel. Absolutely perfect fit. Perfectly balanced; opens w/ just the effort of a little finger. Door finish is like an auto body – red putty over weld spots, sanded and primed. Smooth as a baby’s butt – w/o diaper rash.

where did you get the door? Sounds like i would work great for my home, but not sure that I would put it on a cust. house.
Is it waterproof?
Does it repell bombs and do you need duct tape on em?

you do have 3 1" dead bolts right?
All: It is a great looking door. It could easily be decorated w/ trim to keep it from looking like a vertical morgue slab. It is waterproof - let water get through a 1 inch thick door.
Don't have 3 one inch deadbolts. Contrary to standard practice, this door opens OUT. I want it to be as strong as the walls, not as strong as the bolts. I don't want to open my door inward and have a ton of debris fall 0n my head, chest & feet. If we get hit by anything less than a class 5 tornado, the stairwell should still be standing. Matter of fact, the exterior reinforced concrete walls should still be there. I think my neighbors will be just nosey enough to come looking for survivors. Do any of you know of any town where the local gendarmery doesn't examine all destroyed/damaged homes? I 'spect that me beating on a large steel door w/ a hammer will attract plenty of attention when the rubbernecker/vandals show up. Meanwhile, we can wait patiently inside till they show up w/ a dozer to dig me out. Up here in the Nawth Jawja wilderness, people look out for one another.
