They’re going to have a tough time pouring that basement. Couple streets away from a house I’m working on. We’ve had quite a bit of rain this spring.

Are their tax assessments going up 'cause now they are waterfront?
Maybe they can stock it with bass and bluegill :)

Wonder if the BI will accept that as "undisturbed soils"?
If you owned that much water here, you could sell it.

I'm on my way with a truck load!
We got way to much of the damn stuff. Tama Ia, I know you know the place, has had water up on the south side 4 or 5 times already this year, getting old fast.
Doug
Boy howdy, you ain't kidding. Drove the family to Chicago last week and noticed how high the rivers are - the further east in Iowa we went, the higher they got. On the way back, it was even worse. I'd expect if this week is as bad as the past couple, they'll be sandbagging like hell all over the place.
Frickin' 1993 all over again...can't say as I miss that part of living in Iowa. Nebraska, while wet of late, seems a bit dryer generally.
Jason
PS. Wasn't there a tornado up Tama way Sunday?

Somewhere over in that area but I never heard much about it so I assume it was minor.

We were back for my Dad's 90th birthday in April. Water, water, everywhere. My bro says it's the latest planting he's seen since he started farming in the mid-70s.Hey, I thought you moved to Amana.

Hey, I thought you moved to Amana.
I did, but I have family in Tama and all that water that goes through Tama eventually comes down to the Amanas via the Iowa River. I'm high and dry but mowing the grass every 4 days is getting old fast!
My bro says it's the latest planting he's seen since he started farming in the mid-70s.
My son and I were driving around the other day and I couldnt believe how many fields were still sitting undisturbed. I'm guessing there will be a lot more beans this year as you can plant them as late as the 4th of July and still get something. It's getting very late for corn and no dry spell in site.
Doug
My bro says the Raccoon River is way out of it's banks and he has to take a long way 'round to get into Perry from his farm. He's been there since '73 and he says it's only been this high once before.

How deep would that water be?

How deep would that water be?
I don't know who the builder is on that one, but most of the new basements going in have a finished height around 9'. So maybe that hole is 7-8' deep?
I noticed yesterday that while the water in the ditch has gone down, the basement is still full. So either it isn't draining, or something is draining into it.
This pic is from a house across the street. About 2-3 year old house. Owner and finance company have been battling over it (foreclosure). Meanwhile the electricity got turned off. I have toured this builder's houses and know his basements are around 9'. The water in the window well has been over the window sill, but is just under it right now. Shinning a flashlight through the window shows that the water inside is at the same height. So figure whatever the egress height is and that tells you how deep the water in this basement is.

Wow. I was hoping for their sake that maybe it was just a crawlspace, or just partially dug.

Looks to me like those are slab homes.... not full basements

Slab homes are reserved for the greater Cleavland area!
Doug
We got basements in most homes here but in a lot southern areas I thought they were uncommon because of water issues... in the Southwest, I understand they are virtually non-existant due to the hard earth. Here in the Cleveland area they are the perfect collectors of water and mildew.

Pete
I was just being a smart ####, here a slab home is considered low end, down in TX that's the only thing that you see.
Where JohnT8 is I'm not so sure, I'd assume basements are still pretty common there as I know that part of the country is fairly easy to dig in.
Doug
Oh... It just got me to thinking ... the commonality of slabs in different parts of the country, due to limitations of nature, is interesting.
So i went off on a tangent......
I knew your were being a wise cracker but I lost track of that when i got to typing.

I live near John, and see a LOT of house plans. I'd say we run about 90% basements, 5% slab, and 5% crawl.
Tact: The ability to describe others as they see themselves.
I'll see if I can get a pic when the water goes down. I'm going to guess basement, but it COULD be a crawl. Not a lot of slabs around here.

Pete may be right that it doesn't have a basement. Looking at the pics that is not a lot of dirt on that site so it looks more like a "crawler" or no basement foundation or slab unless the excavator hauled a lot of dirt off site.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
If those house are where i think they are then they are on crawls Chatham right?
Yes, Willows. I'll try for another pic Friday, hopefully the water will be down by then (assuming we don't get a bunch today).
As much as I like basements, that sure is a high water table over there. Seems like the deep basements are pumping from about Nov to Aug on regular years. And this has been a waaay wet one.

Crawl. Made a better story as a basement though ;)

That was my first reaction upon seeing the pictures. I would think that the builder would have som serious liability exposure if someone were to get injured or drown in there.
