Did they have any pictures of other homes they'd built? I'm guessing its going to be modular construction.

wonder how much subliminal advertising will be "built in"....

Wonder if they'd allow my F-150 on site
there was a time when the rat cars weren't allowed on big jobs......this is probably gonna end up in the Tavern now
I knew it was a mistake to drop those two bombs. First the electronics market, then the automobile market..........now the housing market
You'd think more countries would be getting in line for one, wouldn't you?

If their houses turn out anything like their cars, that'll be one nice house. Toy House.
Carl
But will they rust out? ;o)
For those of you who don't know, Toyota is almost complete with a new Tundra plant on the southwest side of town. Huge employment benefit for SA.
The problem is going to be the Cisneros connection. He was mayor several years ago, then went to Washington to be the secy of HUD, now he's back. Really a up&coming Hispanic, very sharp. But he has politics running through his veins very badly, and has been the target of two (or three) investigations, one involving payments to a mistress. I think a new probe has just started about unpaid taxes, but I didn't pay attention and could be wrong.
Anyway, as good as he is, his involvement, to me, is not good. If it was a private deal with Toyota and a local builder, I would feel differently, but I'm afraid that money and politics will rule over quality.

I was going to say the same thing about Cisneros--everything sounded great until I saw he was involved.
Henry has been involved in some "home building" type business for some time, I think. Something about some redevelopement of the west side?
Have you seen or do you know anything about any actual construction from his outfit?
I, too, thought it sounded good until I saw Henry's name attached.
He has been sorta speaking on behalf of Toyota recently. They better have a tight grip on their purse strings with him around.

Wasn't he involved in the Mirasol homes? All low income neighborhoods.

All that has been kept quiet. It seems to me anyway.
Funny thing about Henry. He seems to jump out front for thr splash and then never shows up again until some credit it to be taken. Never around when things look down.
He's a great politician.

I just hope that if I ever live in a Toyota house, it's got wires under my recliner I can rip out to get the*&&*&** doorbell to quit!
"I'm afraid that money and politics will rule over quality."
And how is that any different from most private developments????

This isn't the first time they've stepped into a new game. They were going to storm the ski boat market in mid '90s IIRC. Flopped...only hung around for 3 or 4 years. The boats just weren't the benchmark they were touted as.
I can understand wanting to diversify, but at least the boats used Lexus power. What Toyota parts would be used in a house?
PJ
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.

Power windows? Seat belts for earthquake country? ;-)

One thing autos and homes may have in common in the near future is fuel cells

I agree...And much more electronic and robotic items in the future, among the obvious like toto toilets, hitachi cable, plasma screens, servalance cameras, heaters, air conditioners...etc.
This is what I think, "Americans being put to work". And to quot Martha, "And that's a good thing".

Jeff, buy a Volkswagen, they are made, I think, in Tenn. LOL There are a number of reasons why Ford and GM have, or are going to pull the plug, Asian competiton is a little part of if, not the whole reason for plant closeings. We are un-prepared for World Market and the competition that has been generated from other countries. This whole globle marketing and manufacturing, and the need to import natural resources, has come at the wrong time, " Yours, Ours and My Time". :( Americans, don't see the future, pass their noses, and can't read the writing on the walls, until their backs are against it!....Hard times ahead!.....................Pop
I thought I saw that Ford will lay off 30,000 workers over 5 years. That's 6,000/yr. I wonder what the normal attrition is for them ... might be close to that.

"We are un-prepared for World Market and the competition that has been generated from other countries" You are right Pop. When I was living in China in 2000 the daily wage was at a buck a day. The UAW just won't sign a buck/day contract. Until then I guess we are stuck with Russian financing.
Do these houses move under their own power? V8?
What's the lyric to that song? "I owe my soul to the company store..."
The Japanese central bank has $700bn in IOUs from Uncle Sam. Looks to me like they plan to collect on some of that debt in TX.
I Believe, we owe more to Russia, and even more to Chinia. The money President Bush borrows, is to finance the war he has got us into. The Russians have some control over our President Bush, now, they have threaten to call in the IOU's, and we knowing that Chinia and Japan might follow as well, because the dollare value would drop like a rock and bounce off the bottom of the bucket. The only thing that keeps us afloat is that none of them want to exchange a dollar that is valued at 5 cents! It would also have a profound effect on the rest of the worlds countries..........I think I got it somewhat right.............Pop
Re: "The only thing that keeps us afloat is that none of them want to exchange a dollar that is valued at 5 cents! It would also have a profound effect on the rest of the worlds countries"China holds something just this side of 1 Trillion dollars, $1,000,000,000,000. , one million millions, in US debt. Yes they do have an influence on US policy and behavior. The debtor is always, to some extent, the slave of the one who holds the notes. One way to handle it is to print money and inflate the value of the dollar. If I owe you $100 dollars and I can print money until the value of the dollar drops and pay you the $100 in dollars worth only $.50 ea. You end up with only $50 worth of purchasing power. A substantial savings.Of course some of this gets eaten up by the cost of money, the interest rate. So I owe you $100 but it takes me time to get payments together so by the time I go to pay you I owe $150. I pay with inflated dollars so I give you $75 worth of purchasing power when I pay you off. Still a good bit of savings. So inflation with a low interest rate is the way to go. As long as your well heeled enough to survive the shocks. Look for inflation with recession, so called stagflation and a general attempt to disrupt world-wide economic systems so that there is little competition for money. We saw it in the late 70s except this time it is far worse. Uncle Sugar won't be able to reconstruct the safety net that has been systematically destroyed over the last twenty years. Supposed to be an ancient Chinese curse: May you live in interesting times. We may be due for 'interesting times'. Sometimes we could just skip the first three reels and wake up to catch the happy ending. There is going to be a happy ending. Isn't there?
I have nephew that has worked on a lot new homes for Japanese employees of Toyota. He made one interesting comment about them, that really suprised me.
He said that no matter what developement they built them in, Toyota made them build exactly the same house. No employee could have more or less than any other, no matter what their position in the company, if the company was paying for the house.
Now I envision 50 cookie cutter homes coming your way. Every thing standardized down to the number and type of fasteners used. Could be an all Lexus community or all Corola one, but no mixing of the budget here.
Keep us posted on what comes of this.
Dave
I don't think it's intended to be company housing, so there will probably be a lot of variety. With Cisneros involved, it will probably be one step above Habitat housing, and cost twice as much as the median homes.
