Hello –
Are the typical line voltage tracks and lights made in standardized
configurations so I can add to without concern for
the manufacturer ?
Thanks,

There's a constant source of clean water for you to use, and all you have to do is collect it.

No they all differ slightly in my opinion. I hit a yardsale and got 5-4 footer' tracks for a couple of bucks each. They fit really snugly with the cans and joining pieces from Menards (chinese imports) but I only use them cause the fit is tight and it seems secure. They've worked for over 10 years so I don't expect any trouble. I guess I was lucky. Whether it is a good idea depends on how parsimonious you are with your construction bucks.
There also are multi-circuit tracks. You can use two switches to control different banks of lights with those. Obviously those would be incompatable.
There are three major track configurations, plus the issue of running the track with 115 AC or 12 VDC. However, if you pay attention, you can mix and match parts from different manufacturers. Here's one site that explains the differences: http://www.track-lighting.com/index.html
