Plumbing has always been my least favorite discipline. Thanks to Pex and Sharkbite fittings, that is changing. I have not picked up a torch in several months.
I just got certified to install Tracpipe. It is that flexible gas line line with the yellow outer coating. There are several manufacturers, Tracpipe being one of them. Getting “certified” involved sitting in my local plumbing wholesaler’s break room, watching a 20 minute video and taking a written test. All the while some of the employees were having lunch. It looks like I may never, ever, have to deal with iron pipe again.
I have not priced Tracpipe out per foot, but the fittings are apparently comparable in price to Shark Bite fittings. No special tools are need. A 250 foot roll weighs only 40 pounds.
You might want to check if your local plumbing codes allow it, but it seems to be allowed in a lot of places.
Eventually they will come out with a Pex like gas line for use in residential applications, but until then, this is the next best thing.
I was reading concurrent post about how to thread iron pipe, I am happy to report that you no longer have to.

My HVAC installer uses that or something similar. It's yellow and flexible anyway... Thing is, they still use iron to enter most appliances and to stub out for the gas meter. So, we aren't quite iron pipe free... Not sure why they do it that way - but I'll bet it has something to do with money...
