Can anyone out there advise me on how to construct and flash a trap door on a flat torchdown roof? It’s a fire exit and is the only access to the roof so it needs to be easily usable, but I’m afraid of what’s going to happen to the floor below when the first big snow thaws.

Michael,
You're probably going to have to use a premade door fabricated for this specific purpose. There are a few companies out there that manufacture these as they are used on a lot on commercial buildings. To gain the degree of fire rating and weatherproofing that it would need, buying one premade is the only way to go.
I'd check any commercial door retailer in your area or even some larger roofing supply places.

*Mr. Robinson, FYI, these hatches are tested at a laboratory, and given a "rating", and entered into some BOCA appendix, and display a tag proving so. I'm not in design, but you will probably need an architect to interpret the code, identify the type construction, the use of the b uilding, etc, and select one for you.Hope this helps, or stir up a little discussion.
*Roofing Contractor Magazine has an ad for a roof door that would fit your needs. I'm not sure which issue I don't have one in front of me at the moment, but it is either sept or oct.
*Go to this site and check out their products. Beats trying to reinvent the wheel.http://www.lane-aire.com/cat2-1.html
