i have a two year old dock(p/t pine) over salty tidal water. the dock is in south carolina and gets full sun 365 days a year. the dock is 4′ x 650′ so expense of product and application choices are factors to keep in mind. what type of finish does anybody recomend? would an oil finish be better? i don’t want something that will need a lot of sandind and scraping in a year or two when it will need re-coating.
any information is greatly appreciated!
thank you in advance! brad

You want a stain.
A semitransparent stain.
You don't want anything the builds a film as it will peel.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
thank you billh. is there a brand you recomend? spray? roll? brush?
I have not used any oil in the few years. Comsumeers Report has recommended Cabots in the past. Years ago I used Olypic. The last one that I used was a SW water based and did not like and am going to oil for a ceder deck that I need to do, but haven't picked a product.I would roll it on..

thank you for the web site address. i just went there and called them, they were very helpful. i think i'm going to use their product.
Roller will put it down faster on horizontal surafces but brush will beat it in better. Spraying will just waste twice as much of it and oil the water.

"the dock is 4' x 650' so expense of product..."
Gimmee a break! If you can afford coastal property and the taxes on it, and building a 650' dock, the difference between $20/gal and $40/gal is nothing.

Wel, maybe he can't really afford what he has, what with all the taxes!
I second the Penofin recommendation. Lots of colors to pick from, and very good UV resistance. Figure on every year for the first few years, then maybe you will be able to get by with every other year.I wouldn't spray. No need to add it to the water. Roller should work ok, but a brush really does get it worked in better.
thank you for the info.
