This weekend I replaced some windows on my 30 year old house. The siding is cedar shingles.
The existing windows were trimmed out on the exterior with 1″X4″ pine. My wife would like to have the shinges butt directly up to the exterior vinyl clad casing. Is this a problem? The windows are Andersen 400 Series.
A few years ago I had a Marvin door installed by a contractor. He did not trim out the door, so I thought it wouldn’t be a problem to do on the windows if done correctly. Recently, I was told that this is not a good practice and would lead to water problems… Personally I can’t see how…
Can this be done? Any tricks of the trade on ensuring a good installation?

Even though the windows have a vinyl nailing fin, you still need to flash the openings to do a proper job. As for the outside trim, that is a matter of preference.

This article gives you an idea on the technique for properly flashing a flanged window. When it is properly flashed, finishing it is up to you. Siding can butt the vinyl, or casing, it shouldn't matter.
As a personal perference, I like casings; without good casings, it just looks like another vinyl clad house, but that's a matter of opinion, and the good thing is, you can ignore mine and live with yours.
Good luck.
