As I slowly remove the vinyl siding from my log & frame house, I’m left with a dilemma about how (or if) to reuse the vinyl windows. The previous owner evidently didn’t like old homes, so they attempted to cover or replace all that was “old”. As we get back to log, clapboard and board & batten, I hate to trash dozens of nearly new Pella windows…but they don’t fit the old house aesthetic. Does anyone have experience tweaking, trimming or otherwise reworking modern replacement windows to look appopriate in an old home?

Put a picture up so we can take a look?
Sorry not to reply when I first read your post about a week ago. I assumed someone else would be able to offer solutions, but apparently they're all in the same boat as me.
I deal with modern components in older homes all the time and try as best I can to stay consistent with the vintage look. But the thing is, I know what to do when I'm looking at the project. Trying to offer suggestions without a visual reference is a shot in the dark, to say the least. I'm sure if you posted a photo of what you're dealing with, I and others will have plenty of helpful suggestions.

Are the vinyl windows white?
Painting vinyl windows has been discussed here before. I don't remember the specifics...
I'll try to get a picture up later today...but to answer some questions: yes, they are white windows. I don't have a problem with extension jambs and interior trim, but the exteriors have almost no trim or detail. I was contemplating resetting them on/in the clapboard and then fabricating a brickmold that functions somewhat like a backband in that it would be rabbetted to fit over the vinyl trim. But my fear is that this would be a serious water-catcher and would rely too heavily on caulk alone to seal the wood trim to the vinyl
