triple brick and new 6″ exhaust vent
We closed escrow on my new “project” and the kitchen has never had an exhaust vent. My choices are charcoal recirc(no way), down draft(I hate them) and a new vent going out the side of the home. My thought is coring a 6″-7″ hole and sleeving a vent through. I don’t think I need any kind of reinforcement to support the brick above/on sides, or do I?
I can core bigger and insert a 1/4″ steel pipe but is it needed??
I guess insulating the walls is out of the question…
This is the first of a new set of questions to be coming in the next year. Being from Southern Calif, I have never worked on a home that wasn’t stick frame exterior in the 20+ years of working in/on homes. Probably never been in a solid brick house in 35 years either.

Greetings mig,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someones attention that can help you with advice.
Cheers
I'm in a solid brick home too, for the first time. It's a whole new ballgame, I'll tell you that. Don't expect to put any junction boxes on the exterior walls, unless you like wiremold.
As for the vent, I'm not totally sure. On mine, they went down draft and out a basement window. But I see an old one sticking out the wall, so I assume they just bored through and stuck it in with mortar.
I guess my main concern would be the mortar eating through the vent. Maybe there is a wrap or something to prevent this. Or maybe stainless steel? I'd ask a mason what they thought.
