I’m adding some flush mounted fluorescent troffer lights to a drywalled ceiling. They have 4 self-mounting fins that fan out by screwing after putting the troffer into the hole in the drywall. the fins cinch the flange of the light to the ceiling and the fin to some framing members. The fins are really intended to sit on some light framing between the ceiling joists. I’d like to just block up from the drywall and have it (the drywall) just support the lights, which are pretty light. Maybe 10 pounds max.
Anyone done this?

Sure , but if it falls and hits somebody don't blame me. :-)
Well if you're like me and I know I am, I would install it just like the instructions say , then if something goes wrong then they would have to warranty it.
