Both at $400,000 homes
Number 1- a two story brick cape cod with shutters , with an attached brick garage. They tore the brick off the garage, demoed it, built a two story in its place and covered the front with hardie board/ and batten (no shutters just wood trim around each window.. to me looks like cr@@ next to the original brick. is this a cost thing? being done with plans drawn by someone. do house designs exist that are brick on one side and b/b on the other?
number 2, two doors down, started out as a porch addition, then a roof replacement (roof less than 10 years old! but new owners do not know that) , and now the outside siding (vertical plywood type wood), is being covered over with tyrap and hardie board plank is being placed over that.
should they be removing the old siding?

In the case of the "vertical plywood type wood" there likely isn't sheathing under it so now it is the sheathing...
First case sounds like it would look horrible
second case sounds completly normal.
