Need to repair mortar joints in fireplace. Refractory mortar seems to be the commonly recommended product, but in “Building an Efficient Fireplace,” FHB #108, 5/97, the author wrote he used type N mortar for all phases of the fireplace construction, including the firebrick.
Is type N ok for repairs? Or maybe ok for original construction, but not repairs? Also, is type N available as a premix, like Quikrete mortar mix?
Thanks.

you usually find... type N type O & type S the only difference that I've ever read is the amount of lime thats premixed with the portland... ie: portland, lime & sand make mortar... leave out the lime add rock and it's concrete... of course you can have mortar with just lime & sand....
