I have a set of wind chimes and the top where all of the chimes are tied off is made of wood. It is starting to split and generally getting into rough shape from being exposed to the elements. I am looking for something to treat it. Don’t want to laquer/varnish it but would prefer a penetrating oil of some sort. Being unfamiliar with this stuff can anyone recommend what type of oil to treat the wood with. I was thinking maybe boiled linseed like is used on tool handles. Can you offer any guidance? I don’t mind reapplying each year, but want something that will penetrate, not sit on the surface like a varnish would.
TIA

Linseed oil is a base for some oil-based paints. In my experience it is a good product on the northwest coast where we get serious soakings in winter and intense drying in summer. Annual application of a clear product such as boiled linseed oil is required for wood left outdoors. You will likely not prevent splitting unless the wood piece is a section of straight grain red cedar. Keep the wood out of direct sun and life of the wood and finish will be extended.
