Thought some of ya might enjoy this. It’s a truss I did for a job I finished up this afternoon.
This truss is uglier ‘n me and Luka put together.
I don’t know who dreamed up this crap, but I’d sure like to smack ’em…

Well, heck - At least ya know I did something today.
I was once walking through the forest alone. A tree fell right in front of me -- and I didn't hear it.
Ban Boss ! Ban Boss !

Haven't seen the pic yet, but that has got to be an awful lot of ugly !!

Good afternoon Boss -
You mentioned "a" truss. Is this one of many or just one? I'm trying to envision what the building would look like below that thing.
Come to think of it, I'm trying to imagine the roof lines too.
I'll be back after I have a cocktail. Maybe then it will make some sense.
Don K.
Here's a layout view and a 3D view. You can see the roof lines well enough on this. But you can't really see all the ceiling height changes.
A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother.
Psst...There ARE times when stick built is better

"There ARE times when stick built is better"
Of course there are - But this ain't one of them.
I'd like to see you stick frame this sucker with no interior bearings...
When push comes to shove, somebody's gonna figure out that "push" and "shove" mean the same danged thing.
That makes it a challenge either way.

Can you show us were, in the 3D picture, that ugly truss goes?
DaneI will always be a beginner as I am always learning.
"Can you show us were, in the 3D picture, that ugly truss goes?"
It's on the left side - Fourth one in from the purple girder truss.
When two egotists meet, it's an I for an I.
Hey Boss, know all to well about that kind of ugly truss. you running piggy backs on these or do they allow over 12' on truss hieghts. How many peices total, most I've done was 171. You need lots of pink string to see where all the ridge lines are. p.s. the house isn't all that appealing. <!----><!---->
<!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!----><!---->
"you running piggy backs on these or do they allow over 12' on truss hieghts."
We can build and ship up to 14' theoretically. But we limit it to about 13' 6" to make things easier.
"How many pieces total, most I've done was 171."
There were 203 trusses on this house. (Including caps and hip frames)There were 99 unique truss designs. Plus over 100 hangers to install.
Ex-wife for sale. Just take over payments.
Didn't I see that on an episode of "Star Trek?" I wonder what the truss engineer and layout guys said when that design showed up. "Holy ...."
T.
Without looking for more than five seconds, I'm guessing that truss is R2, right next to the hipset girder.
Boss, that is an ugly one. That entire layout and house is actually an easy one, but the individual truss is interesting.
blue
Boss, can you fill us in on what's going on where the bottom chords just stick out there?
The ceiling pan raise is an easy one to execute in trusses, but I cannot figure those dead end bottoms over on the right side of the pic.
"can you fill us in on what's going on where the bottom chords just stick out there?"
The dimensions on the print weren't that good. (They frequently aren't)
So we leave those bottom chords long sometimes so they can be trimmed to fit in the field.
Condoms should be used on every conceivable occasion.
But you can't really see all the ceiling height changes
Awwwhhkwkwk! I can see too many as is ! Egads!Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
After seeing that layout, I couldn't be happier doing circles. I just don't get the appeal of rooflines like that (I know you didn't choose it). Organic forms are sooooo much......calmer.
I just spit coffee on my pants because of that picture

Well put. I don't like the house either.

I can't tell from your pic what exactly is going on. Got a bigger one?If you post 'em as JPGs instead of BMPs the files will be a lot smaller.
When I die, I'm leaving my body to science fiction.
Line drawings are best as .gif's. Photo type pics are best as .jpg's.JPG tends to blur and mess up line drawings. A line drawing as a GIF tends to be as small file-size-wise, as it would be as JPG anyway. As long as it is kept at lines, and solid blocks of colors. But if you get into a bunch of gradients and such, then, like a photograph, the ,jpg will be smallest in file size. But it will -still- blur and mess up the line drawing quality so much that I'd rather see a slightly larger file size and see it in .gif.As a rule, neither one will be even half the file size of a .bmp, for the same screen size pic. Usually something like 20 percent or so of the file size.
Looking for enlightenment is like looking for a flashlight, when all you need the flashlight for is to find the flashlight.
I did the truss drawing as a GIF since it was B&W. But I wasn't sure if the colored layout would work as well, so I just did a JPG. Had it been something serious, it probably would have been better as a PDF.
If you jog in a jogging suit and smoke in a smoking jacket — Why would anyone want to wear a windbreaker?
Agreed about the pdf. Except I don't like .pdf's because you gotta bend over for the Adobe people and let them screw with your computer, just to read the dang things. I want to see the file, I don't want to drop my drawers and do a dance with spyware. Especially spyware that insinuates itself into key parts of my OS.But line drawings, even with color, are best as gif. Graphics with lines and solid colors = .gif always. When in doubt, .PNG is a very good alternative. And most browsers read .PNG
Looking for enlightenment is like looking for a flashlight, when all you need the flashlight for is to find the flashlight.
O.K. - I'll keep that in mind. I didn't know adobe had any spyware type stuff in it. .BTW - If any of you are still following this - The roof trusses on this job were about $23,000.
I was on a game show. When I lost, they gave me a lovely parting gift. It was a comb.
That price just included the design work, right? It's extra to actually make the ugly muthas...<G>?
Is that really a house? It looks more like some kind of committee-designed community/municipal meetin' hall 'er somethin'....

Yeah, right. That's like 8 month's salary for me.
"Is that really a house?"
Yup. I'd take a pic of the print and post it, but I don't have my camera around. And I don't know how copyright laws would be on something like that...
You can't have everything. Where would you put it?
Aww who cares about copyright laws !!!!!
Whats giong on in the pic i posted?
We are building a 5/12 hip roof on a 20' addition to a bank. We set the trusses with your truck ( good operator). After he left we started looking at the layovers that were sent. It is a 4 piece layover, and only three of them hit the trusses. Therefore, I have the peak of the hip "floating" in mid air. All worked out well today though, don't know how others would have framed it, but what I did worked and looks good. The new trusses and overframe but into a 6/12 roof, and I honestly don't know how you, or whoever, could of designed these any different. I just didnt expect to get a peak from you guys.
Your crain guy did a great job. First time I have ever worked with your truck to set trusses. Normally we have a crane on site, this one was to tight for ours.
Was mostly wondering if you drew the job. It is a bank in centralia, for a local GC.

I didn't have anything to do with that job. The vast majority of the stuff I do is in the Springfield area, or in Macoupin County. If your hip gable (layover) didn't fit, it was probably designed by one of the newer designers down at St. Rose. I don't think some of them really have a clue what they're designing or how it all fits together.I don't know why more guys don't use cranes. Sure beats any other method of setting trusses I've seen.
Born free (my father's a doctor).
oh it fit. It just didn't come with anything to lay under it!
It was a challenge and in the end it was fun.
Cranes are the only way I set trusses, just had never used ur trucks before.
As forthe one you just did in this post.........bring it on, could be fun.An inch to short. That's the story of my life !

Don't worry about that; it's ugly enough in your 3-D version.
But I'd really liked to have been a fly on the wall during the design process for that monstrosity, just outta morbid curiosity.....

Holy Crap, Thats all Ive got to say.
You suppose a couple of the good ol' boys can set that by hand, or might they need a crane?

"You suppose a couple of the good ol' boys can set that by hand, or might they need a crane?"
I can't imagine trying to set 'em by hand. Some of those are more than 40' long, 13' tall, and on top of 11' or 14' tall walls.
