I wish to mount a Stainless under mount sink to a laminated white oak counter top (1″ thick”). The sink manufacture (Franke) supplied silicone caulk as the sealant. Should I put shims between the top and sink when first clamping the uncured caulk then remove them when cured and clamp tight? The idea is to keep a thin gasket of caulk to allow a compliant seal.

Are you going to put a "perfect" bead of silicon around the top that is thin enough so it doesn't bend the stainless when clamping?
Usually we put a generous amount of caulk on the lip then clamp or secure the brackets & force the caulking into all uneven spaces of the two surfaces then clean up the "squeeze out".
