Is there any reason why air conditioning runs cannot be underground? Here in the desert southwest we put the return runs underground, but the supply runs all seem to go through the attic space. It would seem that an underground run would keep the air cooler, although the cost might be more given materials (PVC pipe in Arizona) and the need for trenching. Any thoughts?

There was a thread recently about water in the underground vents.
Maybe this is it, cold a/c air may pick up the moisture that will (inevitably?) get into the underground vents. The return is OK, since any moisture picked up will be taken out of the air as condensate inside the unit. ?? FWIW
I remember some comments one time about mold growth in underground ducts. Doesn't take much condensation to provide for mold growth and you will inevitably get some from the cooler ground.
