Have a job that involves the laying of 3/4 T&G maple flooring over plywood subfloor. Came across several sights that suggest 15 lb felt paper under the maple. To me 15 lb felt is commonly called tarpaper. Is there a 15 lb felt that is not impregnated with tar . Has nyone used 15 lb felt paper or any suggestions for a good underlay would be appreciated. TIA

Rosin paper is sometimes used. You can get it in big rolls at most places that sell flooring.
You definitely want paper to reduce squeaks where the maple rubs against subfloor, whether tarpaper or rosin papre depends whether you are over aa damp crawl or over a radiant infloor heat.
The heat can cause the tarpaper to continue off-gassing and some folks smell the asphalt. Moisture under in a crawl should be dealt with otherwise anyhow, but TP can help keep it from upping the finished floor. In alll other cases, rosin paper is easier to use and less expensive

Yes....15# felt is also known as "tar-paper". It is often used as as underlayment for a hardwood floor install. Rosin (pink paper) is also used and should be readily available from your supplier.
Piffin gave examples of where to use which, when.

I use an underlay we locally call "triple 30" which is a thin ashalt emulsion sandwiched between a front and back surface of kraft paper.
Some folks call it "wax Paper".
It does not off-gas, lays much smoother than felt paper and was actually formulated as a wood floor underlayment. It lays very flat and is inexpensive....a 500 sq. ft. roll is about $13.00. Most lumber yards either carry it or can get it for you.
Here's a pic of a flooring job underway last Summer...
Here's another. (that's our youngest daughter. Ain't she something?)

How you and yours been?
Great. Todd's back in the States, Amy's getting married this summer to a terrific guy and Lindy's finishing up her BA this winter. Kathy and I have been traveling a lot and the new house is ALMOST ready to move into. I've been working with a really great young carpenter the past couple months - what an experience that's been. Life is busy, but very good.
How's life on the coast? You getting enough rain this fall? Holy smokes, man, this has been a wet month.
