Depending on the type of glue, soaking it with warm/hot water should soften it enough to be able to remove it. Scrape off as much as possible before the water.Adding vinegar is supposed to help loosten the glue, but I haven't tryed that.
Be aware that any water might do some damage to the finish. If you are going to refinish the piece, no problem.
Try posting this over in Knots, too. They might come up with some other ideas.
