I am a deck builder who is now slow and working on my own place 1925 vintage “craftsman style” home…installing hardwood floor (3/4 inch unfinished) in a 28 x18 room.
I have 2×8 joists 16″ oc with 1 x8 fir decking running at an angle (45 degree)with new 1/2 plywood nailed down. My problem is that the floor has a crown.. it seems that the weight of the outside wall and one interior wall has caused the house to settle creating a crown in the middle..this is on the 18 ft. span. Luckily I have a basement and what’s happening down there is that I have a third supporting wall in the middle of the 18 ft span. The joists are not cut on this wall so I have removed it..allowing the floor to come down 1/2 inch..it is now being temporarily supported BUT the durn floor STILL needs to come down some more ?! Any ideas? Does anyone know the tolerances needed for 3 inch strip floor? String lines to sight the floor? All ideas will be of GREAT help. Thanks Don Garrison

Don,
Have you considered pouring a self leveling compound like Ardex 15 over the low sides of the crown? After pouring and a couple of days dry time, glue and nail a 1/2" sheet of plywood over the total surface. That will sandwich the Ardex from comming apart. At the deepest part of the low spots, install differing layers of plywood to fill those area up so that the pour is not so thick. You still have to have wood to nail the floor to. Full spread all of the plywood parts down with any cheap wood floor adhesive so you don't aquire any squeeks later. Your floor may be a little taller than you would like, but proper use of reducers will make it fine and your floor will be flat to within 1/4" in 10 ft. GW
