I am having a porch ceiling un upstate NY covered with 1×6 premium knotty pine. I was planning on leaving it as-is and not putting any coating on it. How will it weather in that circumastance? The installer says it should not change much since it’s not really exposed directly to sunlight and rain – maybe get a llittle bit yellower over time.
Thoughts?

It will pick up moisture in the air and swell probably. The heat up above could add to the weirdness.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

I installed a beadboard ceiling on my back porch about 20 years ago; I never got around to putting any sort of finish on it, and it looks fine - no weathering or change of color to speak of, and it hasn't swelled or shrunk that I can tell.
It's made of fir so there may be differences, but as long as it's out of the weather and the sun I'd think pine would hold up about the same. I'm in Minneapolis, so it certainly experiences weather extremes.
Fir is more stable than pine.

It will age and go towards grey but nearly as fast as siding will.
I have torn some down that was almost black from 110 years of mildew growth staining it.

I did the same some ten years ago. it turned grey from mildew. if I had to do it over again I would put a clear sealer on both sides
