I did like to build farmy stuff like a lean toos and car ports. I would build them without adding much load to any existing structure. I read somewhere that building on concrete piers is a lot like building a pole structure. I’d rather not have wood in the soil, concrete works for me.
I see simpson strong tie has huricane or eathquake quality anchors/joints.
Does anybody know of books or articles I could read on this subject?
Let’s say my first structure is a 24×24 carport with like timber frame sides and trusses up top. I’d just like to just have three uprights on the gable end where the vehicles come in and out. So one upright in the middle that could support a steel I-beam down the middle of the carport.
With my trolley crane I want to be able to do things like chain hoist the engine from a 3/4 ton PU. If was lifting something heavy and had my load blocked from moving I could install a temporary steel post to prop up the I-beam near the load. My floor is going to be 5″ concrete with cattle panels as rebar. So hopefully the beam is not going to be real beefy.
So do you think a 6″x6″ on an 8″ concrete pier on 12″ diameter footing would be strong enough out in the middle of that drive-in-end? How about 4 similar posts down each of side. That’s makes them 8 foot on center. That would be ten piers total.

I'ld try something like this instead;

About your footings and piers, gotta know more about your soil conditions and frostline.
SamT
Soil, LOL, my soil guy calls it gravely overflow. So it's rocky with clay.
If you dig down 3 feet you'll either hit water or bed rock. I think 3 feet is the frost line.
Of course, I hate that post in the middle. That's the one I want to install on a as-needed basis. Looking at your picture I think the truck is out of scale.
Let's forget the chain hoist. How about just the open floor space carport? Do you think 10 piers is enough? Did I mention I was using 6"x6" for my columns? I can get oak ( Penta ) or spruce ( the stuff that eats untreated nails ).
Does the simpson anchor resist the rusting action of the modern treated woods?

Dave,
I'm not qualified to comment on that connection of the posts to the piers.
Assuming you are going to slab the floor area, Are you planning a FPSF, (Frost Protected Shallow Foundation, which is basically a slab with underground foam outriggers,) a Standard 3' deep Tee Footing, or a floating slab around the piers?
I tried to envision that truck at about 6'x12', or about the same as my Toyota. Have you ever measured an F250?
SamT
I was thinking a floating slab.
I never heard of the foam. I doubt ground hogs respect foam though. Do they sell the foam at my local big box or do I need a specialty supplier?
The 3' footings would be really nice, but my little cow herd keeps us poor. I was going with piers to save all that digging. OTH, 5" of gravel and 5" concrete is going to call for digging machine rental/hire.
