I have a 12volt Makita impact driver pod style that I purchased when they first came out. I can honestly say that it is one of best tools I have ever owned and I use it almost every day. However I have had to buy 2 replacement batteries for it (50 a pop) and now I think I need another one. my question is do you think I should take the leap and buy a new 18 volt Makita with the lithium ion batteries. I am just afraid I will get new batteries and the driver will conk out. Thanks ahead of time for your advice.

Yes I do, and I'd be glad to take the old one off your hands.

Been using the 18v Makita LiOn kit for a year now. Almost daily. On the current project the circ saw (very nice) and impact driver are used daily.
That said, would I buy the kit again? Yes. I am a Happy Camper. Good performance and ergonomics. The cheapest cost per tool is found in buying the big kit.
Figure two years on a laptop battery. Not much different in LiOn tools. Read you get about 200 charge cycles, so I run them till they go URR.
