I will be using 2×6 rafters for my 4/12 hip roof but should I upsize the hip rafters? I only have about 4″ hap so I will have to clip them by quite a bit. How much are rafters allowed to be clipped?
The building width is 26′-5 1/2″ with a 2′ overhang.

There is an article in the JLC Library that describes the engineering for hips and valleys. If I remember correctly, the general rule of thumb is to size up 1 from the commons and double.
So if your rafters are 2x6, then a double 2x8 should suffice. Now that only works if your commons are sized correctly and it may not work if there were special circumstances like you lived in Aspen and the snow loads were huge.
Not too much snow here in S.W. Texas. Is clipping half off okay though Tim?
The seat cut is what it is - determined by h.a.p. Sometimes it ends up being half the depth of the hip. View Image “Good work costs much more than poor imitation or factory product” – Charles GreeneCaliforniaRemodelingContractor.com
Remember I mentioned putting a 2x10 on the flat at the corner? I think you are beginning to understand one of the reasons we do that.
Use a 2x8 hip., Don't worry about the cut. When your ready to cut this roof ask here first because if you don't you will cut the hip wrong. I guarantee you that.
Give me the layout measurement to your longest jack rafter and I will give you the length and then I will give you the length of the rest of your jack rafters or just show you the step off distance from your framing square to get the length by using your longest jack rafter.
I got more faith than you. If he can figure out how to step the hip off with his manly framing square, I'll be impressed though.
I know he won't mark the HAP cut from the right spot on the hip since it's his first hip because a lot of framers still don't mark it from the right spot because they were never told how too.Joe Carola
Thanks Joe, will do.
